ExxonMobil: Topic High performing transformer oils: understanding composition beyond specifications

Free Thursday, 22 October 2026, 4:00 PM TZ TZ Europe/Zagreb

Hosted by: ExxonMobiil

Transformer oils are often evaluated and selected based on compliance with established industry specifications. While these standards provide important performance benchmarks, they do not always reveal the full picture behind an oil’s behavior in service.

Mineral transformer oils are complex mixtures of naphthenic, paraffinic, and aromatic molecules, and the balance between these constituents can influence key properties such as dielectric performance, thermal characteristics, oxidation stability, low-temperature behavior, and health and safety profiles. Understanding these compositional differences can provide valuable insights into why transformer oils with seemingly similar specifications may perform differently in operation.

This webinar will explore the relationship between molecular composition and transformer oil performance, examining how different hydrocarbon families contribute to the characteristics required for reliable transformer operation. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that drive oil performance and the role composition plays in meeting the evolving demands of today’s transformer industry.

The session will also discuss analytical techniques used to characterize transformer oil composition, presenting the findings of a comparative study evaluating three different test methods. The strengths and limitations of traditional and modern analytical approaches will be examined, highlighting the importance of using advanced characterization technologies to obtain a more accurate view of the composition.

Finally, the webinar will demonstrate how these insights can be applied to the development of new transformer oils. By understanding the links between composition and performance, manufacturers can engineer balanced formulations designed to address the industry’s growing expectations for reliability, efficiency, and long-term asset protection.

Key takeaways:

  • Understand the role of naphthenic, paraffinic, and aromatic molecules in transformer oils.
  • Discover how composition influences electrical, thermal, and safety-related properties.
  • Explore modern approaches to transformer oil compositional analysis.
  • Gain insights into how composition-driven design can enable high-performance transformer fluids.
