On Load Tap-changers for power transformers have been in use for around 100 years, modern Tap-changers are very compact in size, with higher step capacities. OLTC is considered to be the most critical and expensive equipment for a transformer.
Its main function is to change tap of the regulating winding by which a transformer provides a stable voltage at the output terminal. Due to its critical working, typical construction, and importance being the only moving part of the transformer IEC, IEEE and CIGRE developed separately specified standards for OLTC manufacturing and testing.
