Variable Shunt Reactors: A Key to Grid Voltage Stability

Free Tuesday, 27 October 2026, 2:00 PM TZ TZ Europe/Zagreb

Hosted by: Reinhausen GmbH (MR)

This lesson provides an introduction to Variable Shunt Reactors (VSRs) and their role in modern power grids. Participants will learn the fundamentals of reactive power compensation, voltage control, and the challenges utilities face due to fluctuating load conditions and increasing renewable energy integration. The course explains how shunt reactors absorb reactive power, how Variable Shunt Reactors extend this functionality through adjustable reactance, and why on-load tap-changers (OLTCs) are a key enabling technology. Practical grid applications, operational benefits, and the impact of VSRs on voltage stability, transmission efficiency, and grid reliability are covered. By the end of the lesson, attendees will understand when and why VSRs are used and how they contribute to a more flexible and resilient power system.
