Transformer testing

Testing & Diagnostics

Duration: 20 hours

Course Program Type: Professional Certificate / Continuing Education Program

Course Program Purpose

The Power Transformer Testing programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of transformer testing throughout the entire manufacturing and acceptance process.

The course explains the engineering principles, objectives, procedures, instrumentation, and acceptance criteria associated with the complete range of transformer tests, from routine electrical measurements to advanced dielectric, thermal, mechanical, and auxiliary system verification. Participants gain practical knowledge of factory acceptance testing (FAT), type testing, insulation verification, impulse testing, partial discharge measurements, thermal performance evaluation, acoustic testing, auxiliary equipment verification, and mechanical integrity assessment.

Transformer Testing Course – E-LESSON #3 – Winding resistance measurement

This lesson is hosted by Balazs Sztari and it is counducted at the Basic level. The measurement of ohmic resistance between the terminals of a power transformer is a tool of key importance for production quality control, factory acceptance test, diagnostics and condition assessment. This lesson covers the importance and methods of measuring winding resistance […]

Intermediate Level

Transformer Testing course – e-lesson #6: Dielectric tests on power transformers

This is the sixth lesson in a transformer testing course, focusing on the dielectric tests performed on power transformers. The lesson will cover the relevant standards, key definitions, and the specific test requirements outlined in both IEC and IEEE standards. It will explain the importance of properly preparing the transformer before dielectric testing, including the […]

Transformer Testing Course – e-lesson #7: Lightning impulse test (part I)

Lightning impulse and chopped wave LI tests are the highest peak value dielectric tests, those intended to verify the insulation integrity for stresses caused by atmospheric overvoltages and transients. Welcome to the seventh e-lesson in the transformer testing course, where we will focus on the topic of lightning impulse testing. This is a crucial test […]

Transformer Testing Course - e-lesson#9

Intermediate Level

Transformer testing course – e-lesson #9 Switching Impulse Test

This is the ninth lesson in the Transformer Testing Course, covering the topic of switching impulse testing for power transformers. The switching impulse test verifies a transformer’s insulation capability to withstand slow rise time transient voltages associated with switching operations. This test is particularly important for transformers connected to long power lines and high voltage […]

Intermediate Level

Transformer testing course – e-lesson #10: Applied voltage test

This is the 10th lesson in the Transformer Testing Course, covering the applied voltage test. The applied voltage test is a routine test to verify the AC voltage withstand strength of transformer terminals. The test involves applying AC voltage to all terminals of the winding, with no real current flowing through the winding. The test […]

Master's Level

Transformer testing course – e-lesson #16: Insulation resistance measurement

Join us for the lesson #16 of the Transformer testing course, authored and hosted by Balazs Sztari. The lesson is presented on the Master’s level and here you can register. This lesson will cover the fundamentals of insulation resistance measurement on power transformers. Insulation resistance is a simple yet important test method for checking the […]
